The Wendy Complex an official selection in International Midtown Theater Festival

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

As you guys know, I did the music design for an outstandingly original play in NYC called “The Wendy Complex.” The writer/director, Jeremy Bloom, initially requested my participation because he said while he was penning the script, he had VasoVerga on his iPod continually.

It was such a challenging yet gratifying experience. Ty and I try to create microcosms in our songs as best we can, but I’ve never done music design for a live play; for another story that could be swayed into the right or wrong tone by my sounds. In college I’d done plenty of sound mixing and design, but it’s easier when you have the edited film up on screen, and the ability to pause and retry sound clips over and over.

In this situation, I had the pleasure of sitting in on rehearsals from the get-go. The actors were kind enough to replay a scene every now and again, but for the most part I had to know the story, make sure I comprehended Jeremy’s vision (he’s a genius, btw - quite a prodigy of all aspects of directing) and plug in my best stab at a musical cue as it arrived in rehearsal - for just one try. I used some instrumental versions of VasoVerga tracks, but also revived some snippets of old songs.

The end product was so well received. Very very moving, and the tone of the piece so whimsical and surreal that I went through withdrawal when it was over. I was honored to meet many audience members who wanted to talk about the music.

Then, I heard good news the other day - The Wendy Complex has been accepted into the International Midtown Theater Festival in NYC! This summer, we will have the opportunity to run the show again, in front of a new audience. I’ll keep you posted with the dates.

Also, a BIG thanks to all you Jetsetters who came out to see the show! It means a lot to me, and I hope you were enraptured by the same melancholy bliss that The Wendy Complex infected me with!

SYNOPSIS
From writer/director Jeremy Bloom, “A skydiver prepares to break world records by free fall jumping from just within the ozone. Time: the hours prior to his harrowing leap. Gathered: the press, supporters, dignitaries and his Wife, Wendy. With their eyes on the huge purple sky, they brace themselves like Wendy Darling did before jumping from the window in Peter Pan. A free fall jump is the closest people get to flying, losing any semblance of gravity. This: a happy thought, indeed.”

*Ithaca note: Set designer for The Wendy Project is Ithaca College alumn, Stephanie Tucci!
